History
La Fédération du
sport francophone de l’Alberta (FSFA)
In June of 1991, after having participated in the Jeux
de l’Acadie (Acadia games), young people from
Western Canada decided to organize similar games but
with a provincial perspective, here in Alberta. This
important event would meet a need identified by the
community on numerous occasions: accessibility to sporting
events in French, in Alberta. The dream became a reality
in October 1992 when the first Jeux francophones de
l’Alberta (Alberta Francophone Games) were held
in Edmonton. An impressive number of athletes and volunteers
(150 and over 75 respectively) participated in this
event, which consisted of three sports: track and field,
volleyball and badminton.
Following the next Games, which were held in Edmonton
in November 1993, the organizing committee for the Jeux
et Francophonie jeunesse de l’Alberta (FJA) decided
to create a separate but affiliated organisation to
develop the Francophone culture and promote it to young
Albertans through sports. And so was created the Société
des Jeux francophones de l’Alberta (SJFA).
Over the years, the event has expanded and reached a
level of superior quality. Various regions of Alberta
have demonstrated considerable interest in hosting the
event. The provincial games have been held in:
- 1992, 1st year, Edmonton
- 1993, 2nd year, Edmonton
- 1995, 3rd year, Edmonton
- 1996, 4th year, St-Albert
- 1997, 5th year, Peace River
- 1998, 6th year, Edmonton
- 1999, 7th year, Edmonton
- 2000, 8th year, Fort McMurray
- 2001, 9th year, Peace River
- 2002, 10th year, Legal
- 2003, 11th year, Edmonton
- 2004, 12th year, Edmonton
- 2005, 13th year, Calgary
- 2006, 14th year, Edmonton
- 2007, 15th year, Red Deer
In 2002, the Société des Jeux francophones
de l’Alberta became the Fédération
du sport francophone de l’Alberta (FSFA). Its
mandate was broadened to encourage French sporting events
throughout the province. In 2006, we organized the second
National Francophone Basketball Championships in Calgary.
The FSFA now has two offices, one in Edmonton and one
in Calgary, allowing us to better serve Albertans.
